This seemed like a big deal until news of the Jakarta quake started pouring in. Comair - the Delta subsidiary airline that CRChair and I took to both Sean and Ward's weddings this year - has cancelled over 1,000 flights this weekend after its system crashed under the pressure of heavy holiday-related traffic and weather delays. Allegedly, the system had been recently upgraded and management failed to make sure either sufficient staffing was on hand to handle problems and also failed to have a back-up system on hand when the main one fell apart.
Lessons learned:
1. Always and I mean always have a back-up plan for a major upgrade.
2. Never schedule a major upgrade to your system before a holiday. Systems love to crash during people's vacations.
3. Always test your system assuming the worst possible conditions. Poor testers tend to test the common scenarios, and miss the ones covering Christmas traffic and the like.
4. Never let your all of your P.R. people have a holiday off. This story has gotten much bigger because no one was available to talk to the press or worried families.
5. Don't worry about our society losing its fear of God anytime soon. I will bet hundreds of travellers and Comair workers are rediscovering the power (and comfort) of prayer in terminals all over the nation.
