Removing Foot From Mouth

The press was quick to jump all over Arnold's comments to a German reporter when he supposedly made the statement that the Republican party needed to move to the left. This was, of course, not something a lot of Republicans wanted to hear. It turns on there's good news for them. Arnold didn't actually say that the party should move to the left. Instead, the reporter now admits that isn't what Arnold said. His actual comments read differently and were apparently translated to "make it easier to read in German." Here's what Arnold really said,
"Keep [the Republican Party] to the right where it is, but ... cross over that centerline a little bit, because that would immediately take away 5 percent from the Democrats."
As a not-fluent-but-competent reader of German, let me assure you that there is nothing that tricky in Arnold's comments that would have required the reporter to change his comments from "We should stay where we are and reach out to the center." to "We need to move to the left."
