Watson Is Dead. Long Live Alameda!

Watson has been for years one of the essential programs for every internet-connected Mac user. Rather than being another slow and ponderous web browser, this little program bypasses HTML completely to pull the data you need directly from host websites and thus is lightning-fast. It has been one reason why web browsing on MacOS X has been superior to even Windows XP for a long time. Well, no longer. The author's website has officially confirmed that Sun has bought all of the rights to Watson, rewritten it for Java, and will be rereleasing the app in a form that will be functional on Windows, Linux, Sun, and MacOS X. This is GREAT news for fans of other platforms, but less so for us Mac-zealots. Watson's support will end October 2004.

Great move by Sun. Bad choice by Apple to never acquire this company for themselves.
