The Stem Cell Controversy

The Democrats have announced that they will let Ron Reagan speak at their convention concerning stem cell research. It's kind of funny how they can get credit for having a Reagan speak on their behalf and have it serve as a sign of their "inclusiveness." Never mind that Ron Reagan is almost as liberal of John Kerry, that's not what's important here.

What actually needs to be considered is the policy and the Dems are right to bring this issue up. As one who ardently opposes abortion, I cannot support stem cell research that comes about because of an aborted fetus. However, there are many other ways to get stem cells, all of which should not be particularly off-putting to most conservatives. Indeed, many of the most conservative voices in American politics have come out in favor of stem cell research. And why not? We have the chance to help people who are in great pain and suffering. Whenever we can do that ethically, I believe we should.

The most interesting aspect of the debate is that President Bush has been labeled as the "bad guy" in all of this. His policy allows us to work on more lines of stem cells than we need right now, and he has never said that stem cell research can't go forward. His argument is that the government won't pay for it. Anyone who knows about the private sector or business knows that if stem cell research is cost-effective at all, then private companies will pick up the research. And our government hasn't denied the right for said companies to do so. Bush has simply said that the government is going to limit its work on the matter right now. It is understandable that those with loved ones suffering might want the cure sooner rather than later. But instead of lobbying the government maybe they should lobby the companies with the technology and ability to tackle the problem now.
