MSNBC is reporting that there are those within Congress and the White House who want the passage of a bill which would allow the postponing of elections if Al-Qaeda stages an attack during the election season. Their reasoning is that if an attack were to take place close to election day (1) It might be difficult to ensure the safety of citizens, and (2) Election turnout might be suppressed by voters who are fearful for their lives and/or safety. This idea makes me very uncomfortable. As George Will noted some months back, we did not postpone elections even during the Civil War. If the greatest threat to the Union in the history of our country did not put off the election cycle, why would we allow the terrorists to do so? On the other hand, I certainly see the danger involved here and would not want to ask my fellow citizens to get out and vote if, say, they were terrified of an anthrax attack.
This is a tough issue. I tend to think it is up to us to be brave even in the face of attacks. But sometimes brave and foolhardy can be kissing cousins in a situation like this.
