CNN is reporting that Iraq's new government is urging foreign governments not to negotiate with insurgents and terrorists within Iraq who might be kidnapping their people. If you missed the story earlier in the week, some insurgents took a Phillipino hostage and threatened to behead him if the Phillipine govenment did not withdraw their troops. Eager to please, the Phillipino government agreed to withdraw their troops (which were only there to train the new Iraqi army anyway) by August 20. "Not good enough!" thundered the terrorists, newly emboldened by the cave-in. "You must leave by July 20!" The Phillipine president responded that this was simply not possible (probably due to the simple coordination needed to get them out). Since then, the insurgents have announced the prisoner is dead, no he's fine, no he's been beheaded, no he's okay, no he's being tortured, no we haven't touched him, and so on and so on.
It is time to realize that negotiating with terrorists only emboldens them. Such people draw their power from the fear that their victims show. Giving in only strengthens them, by demonstrating more fear. The world needn't emulate the American cowboy spirit of "Go ahead, make my day," but they should at least emulate Ghandi's example of peaceful resistance to evil.
