Same-Sex Marriage Issue: Time to Contact your Senators

There is quite a diversity of views here at Mod-BLog about the issue of Same-Sex Marriage, at least as to how it should be handled in public policy. We are even planning a debate on the issue to be posted here in one of the following weeks. However, as Congress will be returning to business soon, it is time for our readers to start seriously considering their own positions on the issues. Especially as it pertains to the proposed Federal Marriage Ammendment (FMA). It is time to start checking out sites supporting the ammendment and sites opposing it. And it is time to write your Senators to let your voice be heard. A vote is likely to come up before the election, and it is likely to be a defining one, either way, which will drive debate during the elections of 2004.

The biggest thing we need to realize is that a position must be taken, either way. I am one who is very uncomfortable with the FMA as ammendments to the Constitution are the "nuclear option" in passing law. But it appears that it is the Judicial Branch where this issue will be decided, not the Legislative where it really should be. Compromise is possible in the Legislative Branch, but not in the Courts. Now that the extremists have chosen the ground on which we are fighting, it is up to us to decide which side of the line we are going to stand.
