WB About to Murder THE GREEN LANTERN

For those of us who grew up watching the Super Friends or any of the DC-comics based superhero cartoons, there was a real underdog favorite superhero. He did not have the flash of Wonder Woman, the fashion sense of Batman, or the pure machismo of Superman, yet his powers gave a young kid the best possibility for exercising the imagination: The Green Lantern!. This superhero held an alien ring capable of doing literally anything, if the user simply had the imagination to use it. What an incredible chance for DC to turn around their long string of goose-eggs with a fresh new super hero movie!



But no.



Ain't It Cool News is reporting that Jack Black of School of Rock fame has been signed to play the Green Lantern. Apparently, they are looking to make an action-comedy in the spirit of The Mask. Sigh. For those not in the know, GL is not a comedic figure. He is more in the Superman mold of "normal guy miraculously chosen to do good." This no doubt ends for all time the possibility of a serious attempt at this superhero's story.



C'mon, D.C! It is time to learn what Marvel has! Superheros are the modern heroes of myth, like Odysseus was for the Greeks. Return to taking your heroes at least semi-seriously and retain their original origin stories, and you actually might make money with one of these!
