There is a report out that later this summer, America will put seven aircraft carrier battle groups on China's doorstep. This is apparently meant to be a show of force "encouraging" China to not even contemplate invading Taiwan.
It would be hard to imagine the consequences of another Cold War type of standoff, especially with a country as powerful as China is becoming. Of course, no one thought that it was a good idea to stand down the USSR either. China faces a lot of growing problems as it tries to become the next great superpower. With the right assistance, they might grow to power as our ally. Or they might use us and then turn on us like some of our other allies like *cough* France *cough.* Or we could continue to be uneasy-sort-of-but-not-quite-active-enemies. The future's a risky endeavor, especially trying to guess at it. Whichever direction we take, our country can't afford to have no plan for dealing with China or we will be left in the dust.
