I finally saw SPIDER-MAN 2 yesterday and if you have not seen it yet... well... there are still about 11 hours left in the day to try and find a theater. I can't really find a higher way to praise the film than this: I looked up virtually every spoiler on the web in print, video clips, trailers, etc. and I was still surprised by new details and overall enjoyed every minute of the movie.
The plot, for those who somehow managed to miss the saturation bombing of reviews, trailers, and internet spoiler pages, is that Peter Parker has grown two more years into being Spider-Man, but still is unable to find a balance in his life. He is still madly in love with Mary Jane Watson, but feels compelled to deny that love to avoid making her a target for his enemies. A new villain appears in the form of Dr. Otto Octavius (Dr. Octopus) who "accidentally" fuses four metalic arms to his body, and is thus transformed into a super-villain. At the same time, Peter finds himself losing his powers as his brain tries to come to terms with his competing priorities, and finally he must choose once and for all whether is a Spider-Man, or only mild-manner Peter Parker
The film was great. The action and effects are far better than the first film, and the new villain geniunely different from the Green Goblin in the first film. Sam Raimi's style, his legion of friends doing cameos, and his policy of choosing dramatic leads for his comic book characters (instead of comedic or action stars) continues to set the standard for what a comic book film should be. Raimi understands that superheroes are the legendary heroes of our day, and we should be treating Spider-Man like Ulysses, not like Jackie Chan.
So, to summarize, if you have not yet seen this film, it is time to log off of the computer, and run screaming to your nearest theater to reserve your seat for the next showing. GO!!! NOW!!!
