REVIEW: The Perfect Score

I was one of the lucky few in my days for whom the SATs never really held much fear. I knew I was smart enough to do well on them, and I knew I never wanted to go to Harvard (I preferred being a big fish in a small pond). But for many of my friends, there were no more terrifying letters in the english alphabet than S, A, and T. Recently, a movie that faces that same terror was released on DVD, called THE PERFECT SCORE.

The plot centers around Kyle, a slightly-above-average student who has lived most of his life with only two goals: (1) to become an architect, and (2) to get his architectural training from Cornell. Unfortunately, his SAT scores are *decidedly* average, and Cornell demands far more than he is likely to achieve even with all the prep courses, hypnosis tapes, and latin primers. In desperation, he decides his only way into Cornell is to steal the answers to the SAT. Unfortunately, the ETS (Educational Testing Services) building - coincidentally located right in his home town - is an impregnable fortress... unless you have someone on the inside. Kyle enlists a girl whose father owns the ETS building, along with 4 other unlikely conspiracy members, and attempts to do the impossible and beat the SATs.

The movie is fun and mostly harmless in its presentation. Lots of funny stuff, including a slight-more-than-a-cameo appearance by the always-hilarious Matthew Lillard. The worst part is considerable drug humor in rare scenes, and underage drinking. While the morality of the underlying plot is in doubt, the final result is one that is far better than you might expect from a movie from MTV Films. Everyone does the right thing, and most of them wind up better off for having done the right thing. Recommended to all. I would not be surprised if in 10 years or so this same cast is reunited to remake Ocean's 11... again.
