Israel and the Wall

Let's face it, walls built to separate people tend to be bad things. The Berlin wall is of course the most obvious example of a wall that caused misery and suffering to tens of millions of people. So, it should come as little surprise that the World Court (whoever they are) has issued a statement decrying Israel's wall. I don't think that they are necessarily wrong to do so either, walls are rarely the answer.

However, the fact this same court refuses to condemn, in any way, the continued suicide bombings of the Palestinians reflects a growing problem. They can criticize Israel for infringing on the rights of Palestinians (sorry, I had no idea that blowing innocent children up was a right, maybe we should pass that info onto the Supreme Court) but turn a blind eye to the fact that their inaction and sometimes open support of Palestine has caused the need for this wall.

Up to a couple of years ago, I strongly supported the idea of giving the Palestinians their own land and working actively against Israel's military operations. Don't' misunderstand, I have always believed that Israel has the right to defend themselves. But I also felt that they often come down too hard on the Palestinians and bring about anger that could be avoided. Then, Israel made an amazingly generous and wide sweeping offer to virtually give Arafat everything he wanted and then some. The response? He turned down the offer, suddenly demanding even more. Shortly after, the violence began anew. This reflects why my support for the Palestinian state is so much weaker now, they had the chance for true peace on their own terms and they passed it up to pursue an agenda of terror and violence. Trick me once, shame on you. Trick me twice, shame on me. I believe that most rational observers will not be tricked into believing the Palestinian lie of wanting peace anymore.
