They've been saying it quietly for weeks, now we have the first open suggestion to change the Republican VP. Personally, I don't think Bush will dump Cheney. I think they have too much friendship to do that. I do think Cheney could call it quits and leave gracefully if he choose to.
While it's tempting to imagine a killer ticket for the Republicans, I just don't see it happening that way. I think the team is as it will stay for the election. D'Amoto's arguments for Powell are based in good reason and I think he would bring a massive swing to a Bush ticket. Ultimately, I would most like to see McCain on the ticket. I think he's the perfect balance to Bush and it would set him up (assuming the next four years went well) for a great run at the top seat. Either way, I hope that he is the next nominee in four years but that is looking a bit far down the road. Back to the topic at hand...
I don't believe that Bush can let Cheney go now without the Democrats saying "See, Bush is afraid of us. He knows we've got a stronger candidate and he needs more firepower." While it might be a matter of swallowing his pride, I don't think Bush is likely to let this situation arise. If there is anything that we can all agree on, it's that the President has a very difficult time changing his mind once it's made up.
