Yahoo is reporting that a San Francisco native is claiming a recent video broadcast by Arab television stations showing a beheading is actually based on a stunt he posted to the internet earlier this year. Allegedly, he faked the beheading for his own amusement, using fake blood and other special effects equipment, and Al-Qaeda picked up the video and claimed credit for it. The images shown on the site are not conclusive - the quality of the video makes it hard to tell whether they are an exact, if faded, match - but they do raise questions about the authenticity of the reports.
Another case of "Truth is stranger than fiction." We have always known that the militants' claims had to be taken with a healthy dose of skepticism, but this is pushing it. I am sure the next step for the terrorists is to claim that the footage of the fake beheading is actually a faked, faked beheading. Or something of that sort.
