Jobs justifies loss of Firewire in MacBook

The Fire(wire) Storm has begun with many of the Mac Faithful angrily speaking out against Apple's decision to drop Firewire from the MacBook. One user claims to have an actual response from Steve Jobs, justifying the decision. Personally, I find it less than satisfying.

  1. Well... maybe on the consumer end, but the pro or semi-pro cameras use Firewire, and it offers other perks too, like being able to operate the camera from the computer interface. I don't know if USB 2 will allow the computer to sense when it hits the end of a clip and create a new clip, but having that on Firewire has saved me so much time...

I do see the point of not having it, given that 400 and USB 2 are about the same, but FW800 is so much faster.

If I upgrade I'll definitely try to get a Pro now... or get an older generation. I like Firewire:)

  2. The other thing that Steve-o is forgetting is that firewire requires a lot less processor. As the article points out USB is a dumb (in the technical sense) interface, so everything has to go through the processor - even when you're just moving files. As a result it uses a lot of processor when doing things like backups - not to mention things like video editing. Where firewire is an intelligent interface that doesn't need the processor for as much. Straight file transfers - like backups - don't even touch the processor.

This is especially unfortunate for all the people, like myself, who have invested in FW hard drives. This means either getting new enclosures or finding an affordable USB to FW bridge.

This very well may end up being like when Apple transferred to Intel processors and we all thought it was the worst thing ever. Now we pretty much think it was a great move. We can only hope...

  3. Honestly, I think the FireWire decision was all about space. When they added the DisplayPort and full video card, they had to cut out something else. USB was non-neotiable, power couldn't go, loss of Ethernet would be seen as heresy, and the last time they got rid of a Microphone or Earphone slot they got crucified for it. So poor Firewire was the one to go.

I think it was a bad choice and suspect we'll see some form back in a refresh next year, but it is a gamble that makes sense if your main goal for MacBooks is to sell them to college students (no existing investment in FW hardware) and Windows switchers (who rarely had Firewire anyway). They want die-hard Mac Heads on Pro hardware, with the extra profitability.
