Cheney's speech was good and very typical for him. He made his points effectively and served to remind us what John Kerry's record is like. The Democrats might argue "But every politician changes his mind sometimes, that's the mature thing to do." And this would be true, they all do. But we're not talking about a couple of heartfelt changes here, we're talking about a 20+ year history of changing views at the whim of public opinion. It's like Bill Clinton all over again. And Cheney did a good job reminding us of this.
Miller sure didn't spare any punches in expressing his displeasure with the course of his party. And he also gets credit for saying the best thing all night. Namely, that the Democrats have become so consumed with toppling the President that they have abandoned any positive work for an agenda of open and visceral hate. They're only goal is to get rid of Bush and nothing else matters. They will stand in the way of anything that he and his allies try just to make them look bad. And that's no way to run a country. It just makes it even more effective that a Democrat who gave the keynote speech twice for Bill Clinton is able to realize that.
With that said, I still hope that the President deals with the many other issues that this convention hasn't dealt with yet. If he fails to bring up a new agenda for the next four years, then he has truly passed up his chance to lead. If his time is spent bashing Kerry instead of showing us how he will lead, then I think people will listen. Otherwise, it'll be politics and usual.
