Philly Goes Wireless!

Yahoo! News is reporting that the city fathers of Philadelphia are strongly considering the creation of the "worlds largest hotspot" by installing Wi-Fi internet (i.e. Apple Airport, i.e. 802.11b) transmitters on every lamp post in the city. This would allow anyone in the city to access the internet from anywhere if they have a wireless networking card. This is both intended as a boost to tourism as well as a way to bring the internet to the poorest Philadelphia neighborhoods, where even dial-up access can be hard to find.

It is a great idea. While I am sure traditional dial-up and wired access companies like AOL will hate to see this, wireless networking is the way of the future and more and more web access is becoming a utility like electricity and water, and less of luxury. And I know I would be much more likely to host my next business conference in the city of brotherly love if every attendee was guaranteed free internet! Uh, if I ran any business conferences, that is.
