It's truly ironic that it took a liberal Democrat to balance the budget and proclaim the "end of big government." Of course, the Republican Congress deserves no small amount of credit for achievement. But now we have an otherwise conservative Republican with a Republican Congress and we're seeing spiraling spending growing out of control and rates never before seen. I have been willing to blame much of this on the WOT and especially the increased spending we've had to deal with because of 9/11.
But things are now just getting out of hand and it seems that there is no end in sight. The President's plan as outlined during the convention speech will cost an estimated three trillion dollars just on domestic issues. That is without the price of the WOT included. Iraq will still cost much more and any future wars will continue to increase our spending exponentially.
Sadly, I fear that this will convince many voters that Republicans cannot be trusted with so much power. Right now, they maintain the majority in virtually every area of politics. But I can't see how that can continue (nor that it should continue.) Apparently, the Republicans need the Democrats as much as the reverse is true. I don't think that this will be lost on voters either.
