Title: Stranger than Fiction
MPAA Rating: PG-13
The Plot: IRA Agent Harold Crick (Will Farrell) finds his life suddenly narrated by a mysterious english-accented voice (Emma Thompson), who announced matter-of-factly that he will soon die. Now, he must find a way to save himself from death, just as he is finally discovering how to live.
The Review: I have been looking forward to seeing this movie on DVD for a long time. I missed it in the theater because of lack of time on the weekends. Normally, when I see films like this in the end, I am deeply disappointed by the reality. This time, that was not the case. Wow.
This is a deep, funny, and philosophically complex film. The characters are very strong - I dare anyone not to see a lot of Harold Crick in themselves - and the plot is compelling. Unexpectedly what starts are a dark comedy (in which Will Farrell is not the funny one) turns into an analysis of what it means to live a good life... and die a good death.
Of course, don't walk into this expecting a laugh-out-loud comedy in the mold of Taledega Nights or Old School. This is a quiet comedy. But I think it has something for just about anyone who does not need an explosion every few minutes to keep them awake.
