There is an old saying among Evangelists, "People are born with a God-shaped hole in their hearts." The idea is that everyone insinctively long for a relationship with God, and that happyness is found by coming to a saving knowlege of Him. This can also be expresed by the saying "There are no atheists in foxholes."
Violating my normal ban on New York TImes articles, I feel compelled to post this article where science has come to the essentially the same realization (minus the "happynes is found" part). They are realizing that human brains appeared wired for religious belief, and they are exploring how this belief may be useful.
