Suicide at Ground Zero

The body of Andrew Veal was found Saturday in an off-limits area of Ground Zero. Was Mr. Veal a distraught fiance' who lost his beloved? Was he a despairing parent who lost a child? Was he a policeman or fireman who was mourning the loss of so many brave friends? Nope. His mother alleges that he committed suicide in protest over the results of the 2004 election of George W. Bush.

As I mentioned earlier, I am not one to speak ill of the dead - even of men such as Yasir Arafat. But to anyone else out there considering such a move, please realize now that it simply does not communicate the message you wish it to. Those of us who lived close enough to NYC to know those who died in the Towers do not see Ground Zero as a Republican or Democratic site. While George W. Bush showed great character there as he rallied the country in the days after 9/11, it is not a monument to him and it is in no way a place for political partisanship of either side. It is hallowed ground, which has already soaked up more than its share of innocent blood. Let us add no more, either in sympathy or in protest.
