California Talking About Taxing Miles You Drive

It seems my state is looking towards our wacky neighbors in the north for advice on taxing us more. Oregon is working towards a test run of installing GPS systems into all new cars to calculate how many miles they have driven in Oregon and taxing them at the gas station. California and other states are watching with thoughts of implementing it themselves. It seems all of those hybrids are costing the state lost revenue with the gas tax. As someone who enjoys driving around in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada when I need a break to get away from it all, this really bugs me. I already pay my tax at the pump. On top of this, the potential for privacy invasion is enormous. It's one thing if I have On Star or LoJack and consent to have something that tracks my every move. It's entirely another thing for the government to force me to let them know my whereabouts at all times that my car is running. And no, I really don't want the California Highway Patrol to know just how fast I really was going based on the time it took me to get from point A to point B.
