In a move which is sure to surprise NO ONE who was paying attention, Attorney General John Ashcroft resigned today, leaving the Bush cabinet even before the second term begins. Pointing to many accomplishments, health issues, and a need for "fresh new leadership" Ashcroft gave Bush a 5-page handwritten letter of resignation. Easily the most hated Bush administration official (unless you are listening to Michael Moore talk about GWB himself) Ashcroft was a seen as a polarizing figure, and was generally despised by civil libertarians. I, for one, will not miss the local radio people making Darth Vader sounds whenever the Attorney General gave a speech.
The commerce secretary, Don Evans, also resigned today. One of Bush's closest friends, he was brought in shortly after the firing of the first commerce secretary who had refused to implement any of GWB's major policies.
These are two openings for eager young republicans who want to bask in the glow of a Bush victory, and possibly borrow some legitamacy for a 2008 run for the presidency. No one is mentioning Rudy for either position, but I have to wonder.
