After being stung by charges from a foolish U.N. official of being "stingy", the American government has raised its pledges from $35 million to $350 million. Not bad, eh? Well, now consider this. Private Americans have now given an additional $200 million in private donations. This is what Europe in general, and the U.N. in particular doesn't get about Americans. Lack of movement by an American government does not mean a lack of movement by America. Unlike many nations, we act as a people even when our central governing body does not. First, to take care of the victims, widows, and orphans of 9/11, and now to take care of the victims, widows, and orphans of the Tsunami.
Of course, I suppose in some ways that "foolish" U.N. official may not be so foolish. Who knows if we would have reacted quite so quickly without that bee-sting.
