I have to confess, I am a bit of a Mac snob. However, my experience thus far with Safari 3 is making me waver a bit. It is, hands down, the worst piece of software I've ever had the displeasure to have to use. I am curious, how other users of the new Safari are faring?
This piece of garbage browser fails on me daily, especially at certain sites like CNN, Mod-Blog, Blogger, and Yahoo Mail. It will be a small miracle if I am able to post this piece, that's how bad it is. In addition, I also find that the browser seems to lose the connection, simply hanging in mid load for a page. I haven't even noticed any increase in speed over the previous version of Safari either. I have never encountered such a bug-filled and unpleasant program on a Mac and it is very disappointing to me. So disappointing that I had to use the bold function to express it...
Ward, I am surprised at the bad experiences you continue to have with Firefox and Safari. I have had nothing but good things to say about both browsers. I have had a few issues with posting to Blogger from Safari 3, but those were fixed within a few weeks by Google, and since then have been thrilled. So much so, in fact, that I am currently browsing on the newest version of Webkit - the beta version of Safari - which is lightning fast and rock-solid stable.
YanıtlaSilCan you be more specific with the issues you are seeing? I have had no problems with Blogger in some time, and CNN works for me. I don't use Yahoo mail (access it thru POP or IMAP) so I can't comment on that one.
One thing I *DO* have to ask: do you have any add-ons like SAFT, PithHelmet, or ForgetMeNot? Those have been a NIGHTMARE for me (except PithHelmet and SafariAdBlocker which continue to be GREAT) and the upgrade from 10.4.10 to 10.5 made it worse because Apple changed where these add-ons are located. If you have add-ons, I'd be willing to bet THOSE are the reason for your problems.
No add-ons...It's exactly how it came out of the box, with the exception of any system updates. As for what happens...Well, it just crashes all the time. Sometimes I'm loading a page, sometimes I've already loaded it and I'm browsing and it just freezes and is gone.
YanıtlaSilI'm glad you mention the adblocker because that was the other major complaint I had, and this has happened to Muse as well. In browsing, about 25% of the time, pop-ups are not blocked. Very annoying.
Well, I'll say this, the beta is much faster than what I was just using. I hope it crashes less.
YanıtlaSilActually, the link was good...I have already installed it and am running it.
YanıtlaSilI've never really been a Safari fan because, although it renders fonts beautifully, it doesn;t offer the flexibility with plugins that Firefox offers.
YanıtlaSilWith that said, I've found Safari 2.x to be such a memory hog on my Mac. To be fair, my wife and I sometimes keep multiple login sessions running, but even when there's only one login session, it can be slow, so when I heard about WebKit I thought I'd try it out. For the Mac, it is blazingly fast!
I will plan to go to Firefox 3 but haven't gone to the beta yet because I do not want to lose my plugins. One of the indispensable plugins is the Foxmarks bookmark sync. Is there anything comparable for Safari (that doesn't require .Mac)?
Oops - I meant to say that Firefox 2.x is a memory hog.
YanıtlaSilI have had some difficulty with mine in the past. On mail sites like hotmail, safari won't even work. I just use firefox for that. Same goes with complicated sites with a lot of flash and other plugins. Like my fantasy football site. It either loads so the parts are all scrambled or not at all. I don't usually get upset, I just switch to firefox for those uses.

i only use safari for site testing, so i don't have much to add to this conversation other than i've never heard of anyone having problems with it other than with sites relying on complex javascript. The partial javascript build in safari could be why you have problems in yahoo mail. You may just have a bad install. perhaps you should delete it and all of its preferences and start over from scratch. it's also possible that your build of webkit in the os core could be corrupt thus causing safari to gimp. any of these are possibilities.
YanıtlaSili use firefox for nearly all of my browsing. i use ff2 at work and i'm using ff3b3 at home. both work really great for me. ff2 can be a memory hog, but i think some of that has been fixed with 2.0.0.12. ff3 is amazing. i can't wait for the gold version to be released, so i can feel confident running it at work.
I have two macs with different versions of Safari. BOTH versions have problems with hotmail as well as my wife's work website. The comlex securities seem to send it off the deep end. This isn't an arument. Safari doesn't work as well as firefox period.

Ward, How are you doing with WebKit? Better or worse or same?
YanıtlaSilThe other problem here with focussing on hotmail is the INTENTIONAL coding to Internet Explorer, which tends to break other browsers.
That being said, I admit that I keep around CrossOver Mac, so that I can run Internet Explorer to access my own work website intranet. It works okay under Safari or Firefox, but is happiest under IE for Windows.
So far, webkit is running very smoothly without any crashes and has been very fast. So far, so good. Thanks for the links, hopefully they will continue to help.
YanıtlaSilI actually prefer Safari for most of my browsing. There are a couple of sites that it doesn't work as well with, but for the most part it has been a good surfing experience for me.
YanıtlaSilI do use Fire Fox too, but on my Macs, my default is Safari.
And hey, anything is better than Internet Explorer.
