Over the past year, anecdotal evidence for a cooling planet has exploded. China has its coldest winter in 100 years. Baghdad sees its first snow in all recorded history. North America has the most snowcover in 50 years, with places like Wisconsin the highest since record-keeping began. Record levels of Antarctic sea ice, record cold in Minnesota, Texas, Florida, Mexico, Australia, Iran, Greece, South Africa, Greenland, Argentina, Chile -- the list goes on and on.
Snow in Baghdad??? Global warming proponents are quick to mention that with global warming it means a overall warming of the earth and some parts of the earth will get colder, but it appears that the past twelve months have counteracted all of the warming over the last 100 years.
And the ice that was melting in the arctic?
Gilles Langis, a senior forecaster with the Canadian Ice Service in Ottawa, says the Arctic winter has been so severe the ice has not only recovered, it is actually 10 to 20 cm thicker in many places than at this time last year.
As the author of a second article point out though, "OK, so one winter does not a climate make. It would be premature to claim an Ice Age is looming just because we have had one of our most brutal winters in decades. But if environmentalists and environment reporters can run around shrieking about the manmade destruction of the natural order every time a robin shows up on Georgian Bay two weeks early, then it is at least fair game to use this winter's weather stories to wonder whether the alarmist are being a tad premature."
Global warming and enviromental responsibility have been joined at the hip... and shouldn't be. Even if we as humans aren't affecting global warming, it is still our responsibility to be good stewards of the planet that we have been given.

i agree with BH on this one.
YanıtlaSilThough the new information is interesting. It'll be interesting to see what, if anything, the MSM does with this new data.
I agree, as well, that we need to take care of the earth, just not to the point that I don't get to control my thermostat. (a recently failed bill here in California was going to have a remote controlled thermostat that, I believe, the power company controlled to cut down on power use.) That being said, Bowhunter is also completely correct that global warming and taking care of the earth should not be the same issue.
YanıtlaSilI realize that the last paragraph I wrote in the post seems like I have joined them into one issue. I read the quote more as militant global warming supporters blaming man for global warming.
YanıtlaSilSee, it is getting colder, which is caused by greenhouse gasses, because they make it warmer when it should be colder, and colder when it should be cold! It makes perfect sense! You are just a hate monger who wants to kill the trees and the bunnies and the owls, and all because of your selfish desire to be comfortable! What about the bunnies?! But oh no, you want it to just be HUMANS that are comfortable in your big houses with your thermostats and your electric blankets and your cars. Why can't you give those things to the monkeys to?!
YanıtlaSil-------------------------------
I suspect that will be something along the lines of what the global warming crowd will say in response to this information.:)
As for the MSM... probably will ignore it until the summer when it is hot again.
Oh, I agree with all of you, we still need to be good stewards, but for the right reasons, and using incentives, not penalties.
YanıtlaSilThe problem right now is the theories allow for seemingly contradictory results. A warming earth can change the flow of both ocean and atmospheric currents, leading to colder localized conditions even as the overall temperature of the Earth warms. But also, the warming of the earth may cause localized warming as well. Anecdotal evidence simply is useless in this debate, but inevitably is being used to DRIVE the debate.
YanıtlaSilThe key point which thinkers like BowHunter need to help us understand is how to focus on the carbon cycle. It is a lot easier to reduce overall emissions in vehicles if we can leave aside having to be carbon-neutral. But if carbon emissions ARE the problem (which is the greenhouse theory of global warming) then our priority needs to be carbon-neutrality. If we can answer this question, it will be much easier to make public policy.
And yes, I know that I am not as informed on this issue as I should be. I am hoping people like BH, who are not yet disgusted with the way the environmental movement changes theories on a dime to get the results they want, to help me find real environmentally-friendly policies that make sense and are not just whitewash.
What makes me hopeful are groups like Ducks Unlimited. (ducks.org) These are groups that I support and help me not to be jaded by groups like the sierra club.
