Those of us in the New York City Metro area remember when Michael Bloomberg suddenly switched from his affiliation as a Democrat to a Republican in order to run for Rudolph Giuliani's seat as Mayor of NYC. Many of us cried foul at the time - it was obviously a choice of opportunity and not beliefs - but the party rallied behind him as the best man to beat the Democratic challenger. Well, now we see why it is dangerous to put too much faith in folks like Bloomberg (Dem to GOP), Jim Jeffords (GOP to Independent), or Pat Buchannan (GOP to Political Exile). Yahoo is reporting that Mayor Bloomberg is causing no end of grief to the planners of the August Republican Convention because of a Congressional vote on the allocation of anti-terrorism funds. (The vote would have shifted funds from low-risk targets like rural Nebraska to high-risk targets like New York City.)
It seems both parties are having a hard time playing nice. Earlier this month, the Democrats were having a similar problem with Senator Kerry and the mayor of Boston. Maybe it is time to realize that in such a close election, every person feels the power to have their voice heard by getting in the way of the candidate. We are in for a rough run until November... and it is likely such a contentious campaign will lead to an even more contentious first 100 days after the election, no matter who wins.
