CRChair and I were having this discussion just the other day - that it seems to us that the High Definition DVD War is over... and the winner is neither HD DVD nor Blu Ray. Rather, it is the trend of Upconverting DVD players. After all, why bother with true HD DVD if you can use Progressive Scan and Upconverting technologies on existing (cheap) DVDs to get a decent picture? This article essentially comes to the same conclusion, though with some different reasons. This is horrible news for Sony and Toshiba, and Hollywood in general. The bottom line is that the new release of DVDs is about what the studios want/need and not what the public wants or needs. Thus, there is no reason for a normal person to go HD DVD for now.
Maybe in another 2 years... when Apple has the monopoly on downloadable content.
