Veteran's Affairs data theft impacts 2.2 Million Active Troops

Somehow I had missed the story of a massive data theft from a Veteran's Affairs Office in Virginia. Perhaps it was because at the time, the VA tried to downplay the theft, indicating that only a few veterans were at risk. But now they are admitting that the theft encompasses 2.2 million (that is 2,200,000) of our troops.
VA Secretary Jim Nicholson said the agency was mistaken when it said over the weekend that up to 50,000 Navy and National Guard personnel - and no other active-duty personnel - were affected by the May 3 burglary.
In fact, names, birth dates and Social Security numbers of as many as 1.1 million active-duty personnel from all the armed forces - or 80 percent of all active-duty members - are believed to have been included, along with 430,000 members of the National Guard, and 645,000 members of the Reserves.
Let's be honest here. The article mostly plays up class action lawsuits over fears of identity theft. But the real travesty here is THIS IS A HUGE NATIONAL SECURITY BREACH. What if Al Qaeda were to buy this info from the thieves, and use it to target Americans soldiers and their families? If the Department of Homeland Security is not already involved here, it is time for them to step in.
