So, would you change your choice for candidate tomorrow...
1. ...if Barack Obama pledged to do what it took to reduce or eliminate unnecessary abortions in the USA?
2. ...if John McCain announced his opposition to appointing judges who would overturn Roe-v-Wade?
3. ...if there were a terrorist attack in the USA?
4. ...if Iran offered to give up its nuclear ambitions and recognize the state of Israel?
5. ...if Barack Obama were revealed to have a terminal disease?
6. ...if John McCain were revealed to have taken cocaine while Senator?
Choose one (or more) and leave your thoughts in the comments. "That is not a realistic what-if" is not what I am looking for, because the whole point is to challenge our assumptions about our allegiance. Plus, it would be WAY too easy. :-)
#2 on the surface would give me pause regarding McCain, however there are a lot of nuances to that statement. For me, the issue isn't "overturn Roe" it is a more comprehensive original intent approach to the entire Constitution. So I would definitely have to look into his intent and meaning, but it would give me pause, and probably mean I wouldn't vote for him or would look for a 3rd party candidate.
YanıtlaSil#6 would be a bigger issue in voting for McCain. Much of McCain's appeal to me is that he has the character, judgment and experience to lead the country. #6 would call that into question. I think again, that I would look for a 3rd party or not vote.
#1 would please me, but not enough to overcome the fact that he would still support the (in my view) intentional killing of a human being for convenience.
I have other thoughts, but those were the one's that caused me to seriously look at other options.
#1. As much as I want to like Obama and as much as his stance on abortion is my biggest problem with him, I have problems with other policies of his, so I don't think this would change my mind.
YanıtlaSil#2. McCain has worked hard to appeal to the moral conservatives. This would be a step away from that. I might end up voting for him anyway because he'd be better on abortion than Obama, but I might have to hold my nose while doing it.
#3. No change. (McCain)
#4. No change. (McCain)
#5. No change. (McCain)
#6. I guess it would depend on how recently. He's been in office since 1987. If it was back then and he's been clean for a few decades, then it wouldn't change my vote. If it was shown that he was still struggling with an addiction to cocaine, I might have to change my vote to third party since I'd be worried about having a president on cocaine during a critical decision. Of course, if the president was high during a critical decision time, the 25th amendment could always be invoked, but if it came to that, I would like to see impeachment hearings as well.
That's all I have to say.
YanıtlaSilNone of those things would cause me to change my vote.
