Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae to be seized?

After spending billions bailing out Bear Stearns, it appears that Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae may be placed in a conservatorship by the government in order to safeguard the mortgages they own. This would wipe out the shareholders for both corporations. Typically, both companies have been seen as "safe" stocks, because the companies were guaranteed by the government. This is sure to send shock-waves through the economy, though additional insurance behind mortgages will probably be a good thing in the long-term.

  1. I think this could be a good thing. Yes, it will hurt the investors, but we've been going towards a system where those that do well get to keep all of their profits and those that fail get bailed out by the government. Investment has risks. Have enough personal responsibility to not invest more aggressive than you can.

  2. The markets are up right now... but I think this will put a huge burden on the treasury, probably resulting in more taxes (because there is no way the government will cut anything to save money).

I would rather the market forces operate without interference... then again, the whole mortgage mess started with government interference (in requiring lenders to lend to questionable borrowers) so maybe they need to clean this up.
