Church of England apologizes to Charles Darwin

The Creation/Evolution debate continues to be a Hot War in America, and there are many who feel that Christianity and Evolutionary Theory are fundamentally incompatible. But it appears the Church of England no longer sees any problem here, and is offering a formal apology to Charles Darwin for the Church's overreaction.
The apology, which has been written by the Rev Dr Malcolm Brown, the Church's director of mission and public affairs, says that Christians, in their response to Darwin's theory of natural selection, repeated the mistakes they made in doubting Galileo's astronomy in the 17th century.
"The statement will read: Charles Darwin: 200 years from your birth, the Church of England owes you an apology for misunderstanding you and, by getting our first reaction wrong, encouraging others to misunderstand you still. We try to practise the old virtues of 'faith seeking understanding' and hope that makes some amends."
I have been of the opinion for some time that the Creation/Evolution Debate is, at best, counter-productive most of the time.

  1. Nick,

Wow, that is a long and complex argument. I know the argument well - I have been thru enough Creation classes and books - but it assumes WAY too much about the world and God in that little sentence you put down. I really don't want to have that debate here, especially since I don't want to reveal which side of the divide I come down on.

Anyway, my gut tells me if you counted the number of people turned away from Christianity in the last 50 years by the debate and the numbers turned TO Christ by the debate, we'd wind up with a significant net loss of people open to the gospel. That really is my point.

I even know Christians who have been told if they are believers in Theistic evolution or Old Earth Creationism that they are damned.

  2. Let's try again.

I AGREE WITH YOU. But I do think there are other considerations, such as figuring out the truth (not trying to judge the truth, but just saying).

  3. True. Not saying the debate is not worth having from any standpoint. Truth is truth, and is important. But saying that many of us have overestimated the threat Evolutionary Theory presented to Christianity. Especially since Nietsche saw his influence begin to wane.
