U.S. Troops Barely Miss Italian Journalist

Well, there seemed to be no way for the Iraqi insurgency to stop the rising tide of good news out of Iraq, despite many car bombings and suicide attacks this week. But it has happened and it is at least partially our own fault. An Italian journalist was travelling to a safe point in Iraq after having been freed by hostage-takers. She was in a car with an Italian secret service officer, when U.S. troops openned fire. Apparently, the car was approaching the checkpoint at high speed without any identification, so the U.S. troops assumed it was a terrorist vehicle. The secret service officer was killed, and the journalist was wounded.

This is not only bad P.R. for the U.S. but also comes at a bad time for the Italians as their president is under a lot of internal pressure to withdraw their 3,000 troops. Yet another proof that it is definitely a Friday.
