The Bush Administration Surrenders Its Left Flank on Abortion

Anti-Abortion groups have been encouraged of late by George W. Bush's staunch anti-abortion stand, and there has been a rising tide of common consensus that the next addition to the Supreme Court may mark the beginning of the end for Roe v. Wade. When Wade herself has come out against abortion, it is no shock that pro-lifers and the religious right is confident that the days of genocide of the pre-born is over. But not so fast. While conservatives have been handily nailing down the right flank of the battle here at home, the left flank of world governance appears to be swinging the other way. At a Beijing conference this week, the American and Vatican delegations were shouted down and heckled when they attempted to provide an interpretation of the Global Women's Conference which did not recognize abortion as a fundamental human right. In the end, both delegations dropped amendments to the documents coming out of the conference, lamely claiming that "their point had been made." But now you have to wonder if we will see a day where Roe v. Wade is overturned in the Supreme Court, and then reinforced by a World Court.

And no, I am not an anti-U.N. conspiracy theorist. But I am an analyst who can generally recognize a new strategy when I see one.
