A year or so ago, a few Christian filmmakers released a new film into theeaters in a limited run: Time Changer. The plot of the film can be summed up thusly: A seminary professor in the 1890s has written a book recommending the teaching of morality without mention of God or Jesus. He is opposed by one of his more eccentric colleagues, who turns out to be an inventor on the order of H.G. Well's The Time Machine The colleague sends the professor into the future - our present - where he observes moden society. Interesting premise, and some excellent character actors take part in this film. But one has to wonder if this film was able to break out of the "Wall of Cheesy-ness" that tends to surround explicitly Christian films.
Well, I bought the DVD on a recent sale at Blockbuster, and took a look. The film is indeed a bit cheesy, more than a little in the cheddar vein. The main actor is the biggest problem, with an acting style akin to a mature oak - stiff and unyielding. Likewise, the inability of anyone from 1890 to use a contraction is mystifying. Still, there are ideas there worth considering, and the last scene we are left with is worth everything that came before. Truly inspired. In summary, this is a film worth seeing, but try to make it a rental if you possibly can.
