If you need a reminder of how hostile the media is to anything that this administration even considers doing, then you need look no further then their coverage of this new plan possibly being considered by the Pentagon. Headlines have referred to the plan as implementing "death squads" and make it sound as if we're training Iraqis to do horrible things. But lost in all the noise is what exactly the training actually is. It's special-ops training, the same as we do with our special forces. We're talking about training Iraqis to move in and take out high value targets. It's not different then what we teach our own military to do. Yet, when we consider training Iraqi special forces, they're labeled as "death squads." Let's face it, every special-ops team can be a "death squad" since their mission is often to kill a target.
But we would never refer to Seals as a "death squad." The military might, but everyday citizens and the media don't. So why is the label sticking on this new option? It's very likely that they will be responsible for capturing as many targets as they are for killing them. And let's face it, this is a war. The way you win a war is to kill the "bad guys." Are there still people so hopelessly lost in their own rhetoric that they expect us not to kill the guys trying to kill us? I think our government crossed that bridge quite some time ago. These units would could be invaluable to us if they meet with success.
For months, we've heard that the administration is not doing enough to train Iraqis to defend themselves. Now, they're apparently doing too much. These Iraqis want to defend their home against the "insurgents" and I think the best thing we can do is to train them, help them win, and leave.
