Is it a sign that I am getting old that I look back on the Republican Revolution days and get a little excited? I remember the Contract With America days and the radical revelation that it brought to Americans: it is posible to chose a leader based on his ideas and not simply on party affiliation. It was the start of the expectation in the GOP that every new leader must bring new ideas to the table, and the start of the Democratic party as the party of the status quo - fighting every new idea that comes down the pike.
But then Mr. Newt did something stupid. Something very human, but very stupid. He started an affair with a female staffer, while attempting to bring down Bill Clinton's career over... having an affair with a female staffer. Yes, yes, I know. Clinton also lied under oath, yada, yada, yada. But the fact is that Newt's fall from grace robbed the movement of moral credibility, and in turn showed that Mr. Gingrich could not be counted upon to lead by example. So off he went into talking-head exile, still showing his remarkable intellect and political acumen but to a much smaller audience.
Now, Mr. Newt has out a new book which sharply criticizes the Bush administration and it appears to be the first salvo in a battle to carry him to the White House in 2008. CNN is all a-twitter and many of the liberal leaning mags and sites are furious about the possibility. Calm down, folks. This particular battle you have already won. Republicans can't forgive Newt for dropping the ball during the Impeachment hearings. The "Religious Right" can not forgive him cheating on his sick wife, and then divorcing her while she was still in the throes of a terrible illness. The Moderates can not forgive him for his Right-Wing Ideas. So who exactly would be nominating the man again? Let him run and stoke his own ego. I doubt very seriously anyone will be buying.
