Well, everyone else is reporting on it, so I guess I should make sure our readers are aware, too. Sony's new Cell Processor has been officially debuted to the world. And by "debuted," I mean they have shown some pictures of it and let a few dominant tech junkies geek out at the paper specs. The new chip supposedly will run at over 4 GHz (and we Apple fans were relieved when Intel finally admitted megahertz were not really the story on performance) and is billed as a "supercomputer on a chip." Why? Because it will have multiple processing cores on a single wafer. (Just like those under development by Intel, AMD, Motorola, IBM, etc.) The only really interesting thing about this chip is that it will power the new Sony Playstation 3. But not now.
In other words, Sony will be using a really interesting chip in its newest console, but has no idea when or how. Now, is that really "news"?
