The ruling, by Justice Doris Ling-Cohan, was the first on the state level to side with proponents of gay marriage. In her 62-page decision, she wrote that the state's Domestic Relations Law, which dates to 1909 and limits marriage to unions between opposite-sex couples, deprived gay couples of equal protection and due process rights under the state Constitution...She likened the law to those that once barred interracial marriages and said that words currently used in defining legal marriages - husband and wife, groom and bride - "shall be construed to apply equally to either men or women."More proof that Same Sex Marriage proponents are not interested in compromise. Majorities in most states would be willing to consider alternate arrangements like Civil Unions to protect relationships. But this is inadequate to gay marriage advocates. Only full legal recognition of same sex marriages - by judicial fiat if not by law, constituion, or general acceptance - will do. This is not the heritage of Martin Luther King, Jr.

NYC Judge Finds "Right to Marry" for Same Sex Partners
Well, the "slippery slope" speculators were right. Massachusettes was only the first step in the legal battle over same sex marriage. Angered by democracy, where majorities rejected the legalization of gay marriage in many state referenda, New York City is the next round in the battle. A New York City Judge has ruled that a New York Law banning gay marriage was in violation of the state Constitution.
