One the disappointments of the Nintendo DS has been the fact that in many ways Nintendo is treating this new game system as basically a smaller version of their old Nintendo 64 console. The GBA SP was pretty much the same way, being a clone of the old SNES, and the originaly GameBoy (and GameBoy Color) was pretty much an old NES system stuffed into a tiny case. Some days you can't help wondering "Why couldn't I just have recycled my old console systems myself into nifty portables, and saved myself the cost of rebuying all of the old games?!"
Well, someone did more than talk about it.. This fascinating page is one hackers journey in reengineering all of his old game systems (including an Atari 2600, for you true retro gamers!) into portables that may challenge the Gameboy series for coolness. Of course, they are limited by the capabilities of the systems they are cannibilizing, and are thus never as tiny as a Gameboy. But they can buy used carts off of eBay for $5 that the rest of us are spending $50 to get new from Nintendo in a DS format.
