Most of the time when I see a post on Slashdot about some privacy issue I chalk it up to paranoia. So, this morning when I was parusing the site and saw a post about how Comcast plans to monitor who's watching TV, I was about to have my same reaction - the über-geeks are flipping out again. But then I read the article in question, and I have to say - I agree with the über-geeks on this one. Basically, Comcast plans on putting cameras in their equipment that they install in your house (DVR, cable box, etc...), so that they can watch who's watching TV and better program towards the watcher. Sounds like a great idea... until you realize that this kind of technology has about 18,000,000 ways of being misused. To quote the Slashdot post:
While this sounds 'handy,' it also sounds a bit like the TV sets in 1984.
The newteevee.com article "Comcast Cameras to Start Watching You" portrayed some assumptions that require correction and clarification. I want to be clear that in no way are we exploring any camera devices that would monitor customer behavior.

The camera-based gesture recognition device is in no way designed to - or capable of - monitoring your living room. These technologies are designed to allow simple navigation on a television set just as the Wii remote uses a camera to manage its much heralded gesture-based interactivity.
We are constantly exploring new technologies that better serve our customers. The goal is simple - a better user experience that allows the consumer to get ever increasing value out of their Comcast products.
As with any new technology, we carefully consider the consumer benefits. In fact, we do an enormous amount of consumer testing in advance of making a product decision such as this. Cool, we got a response from Comcast. :) BTW, is it true what he said about the Wii? Wouldn't there be a risk then that if you have your Wii connected to the internet it someone could hack in and see you through your camera?

The problem is never the first intent of any device. The problem is the way it gets used after by others looking to leverage it for non-approved use. Consider that the INTENT of the cell phone was originally to allow you to hold private conversations away from a wire. But it was not long until cell companies HAD to put encryption into their phones, because the unscrupulous - including law enforcement - were using the unencrypted signals to eavesdrop.
