What happens if you try to leave AOL?

Remember a month or so back when the press broke a story about AOL refusing to cancel a customer's account? For a time, when the press was watching closely, AOL amended their ways. But now that they have switched to a free service, it appears they are looking to make a real cancellation as difficult as possible. Buyers beware. If you do not completely cancel your AOL account, they retain the ability to debit your account at their discretion.

And of course, this is a good time to remind AOL members with separate broadband accounts, to stop paying AOL for unused dial-up service.
