I have never been a fan of the parenting theory that says you must be your children's friend to be a good parent. You can be a good parent and your children's friend, but being a parent should come before being their friend. Here is a good example of why I believe that to be true. A mother was
sentenced to 30 years in prison after having drug and alcohol parties for her son and his friends, as well as having sex with at least 5 of the boys. If being a parent had come first in her mind, then this might not have happened.
This story also shows that you need to get over your issues from high school before you become a parent.
Silvia Johnson, 41, described herself to investigators as a "cool mom" who "was never popular with classmates in high school" and who was beginning to feel like one of the group.
At some point you have to realize that being a parent means accepting that you won't always be the coolest person around. Maybe I'm being harsh on this woman, but gosh many of the 6th graders I work with could figure this one out. Ugh!
