TNIV Translation of the Bible Rankles Some

I though this might be especially interesting with the seminary students we have stopping by the site. FoxNews is reporting that Zondervan's new Today's New International Version (TNIV) is drawing criticism for its gender-neutral language and other "politically-correct" revisions.

Today's New International Version (search), or TNIV, has just been published in complete form by Zondervan Publishing. It's meant for the prime-time demographic: adults 18 to 34 years old...In this new translation, some masculine references are made more gender-neutral...Genesis 1:27, "so God created man in his own image" in the more traditional New International Version, is changed in the TNIV to "so God created human beings in his own image."...God remains a "he" in the TNIV. But some critics say this translation changes the meaning of some Old Testament verses that may foreshadow Jesus' life.

We use the NIV (the New International Version) in the Bible Quiz Team I help coach, because it is reknowned for its balancing of readability and precise adherence to the original Greek. I must admit I am not a fan of gender-neutral language in Biblical translations. But at the same time, this particular example does not seem threatening. What do our "experts" on the site think?
