Happy Hanukkah!

We want to wish all of our Jewish readers a very happy Hanukkah, which begins tonight. The Jewish festival of lights has a complex history and the New York Times has up an interesting analysis of the historical context of it all.

Happy Labor Day

Probably no real posts from me today (although I know not to PROMISE this - you never know) but I wanted to take a moment and wish all Mod-Blog posters and readers a happy Labor Day. I hope and pray you are happy, safe and able to rest. And that you are not facing the wrath of Hurricane Gustav.

Cinco De Mayo

I was asking around this last week what "Cinco De Mayo" was, and got answers that varied from "Mexican Independence Day" to "Spanish Marti Gras". So, in the end, I decided to give up and check out Wikipedia instead.

Cinco de Mayo (Spanish for "5th of May") is primarily a regional and not an obligatory federal holiday in Mexico. The holiday commemorates an initial victory of Mexican forces led by General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín over French forces in the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. The date is observed in the United States and other locations around the world as a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride.

A common misconception in the United States is that Cinco de Mayo is Mexico's Independence Day; Mexico's Independence Day is actually September 16 (dieciséis de septiembre in Spanish), which is the most important national patriotic holiday in Mexico.

So there you have it. Now at least if you go out partying tonight, you'll know why.

Good Friday

I always have a problem saying "happy Good Friday", because it's not really a happy day. So, instead I'll say that I hope you all celebrate Good Friday in a way that feels appropriate to the day.

If you're wondering why St Patty's Day is on the 15th instead of the 17th this year, apparently the Catholic Church had it formally changed to avoid conflict with Holy Monday. Definitely thinking ahead although I can't help wondering if that means some intrepid celebraters will simply start today and not stop until Midnight on Monday?
