The Superbowl without all that pesky football

If you're like me and not a fan of American foot, you probably do enjoy the commercials. Well, if either (1) you just want the commercials or (2) you'll be missing the commercials due to scheduling conflicts or loud partiers, all of the major commercials are up on YouTube and ready for your viewing in HD.

Unfortunately, they do not supply any pigs-in-the-blanket to snack on while watching. For that, talk to CRChair.

Ocho Cinco is Expensive

The NFL player formerly known as Chad Johnson would like to have his new name on the back of his NFL uniform. He legally changed his name this August to Chad Ochocinco. The "Ocho Cinco" is in reference to his number which is 85. Well the NFL is saying that if he wants to wear a different name than "Johnson" on his uniform then he has to buy all of the unsold C. Johnson jerseys in the country first. This rule is meant to protect the official apparel companies of the NFL from having wasted merchandise if players change numbers or names. The NFL estimates that there are thousands of unsold "C. Johnson" jerseys out there and that they would have to be bought for at least $45 each to recoup costs. Talk about putting a true price on changing your name.

NFL to Churches: No Superbowl for your HD Sets

Last year, the NFL backed down after trying to enforce a ban on churches having NFL gatherings because of a ban on public showings of over 55 inches. This year they have lost any squeamishness and is forcing churchgoers into bars to watch the big game on big screns.
The NFL said, however, that the copyright law on its games is long-standing and the language read at the end of each game is well known: "This telecast is copyrighted by the NFL for the private use of our audience. Any other use of this telecast or any pictures, descriptions, or accounts of the game without the NFL's consent is prohibited."

The league bans public exhibitions of its games on TV sets or screens larger than 55 inches because smaller sets limit the audience size. The section of federal copyright law giving the NFL protection over the content of its programming exempts sports bars, NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said.
Copyright is supposed to exist to ensure that owners of creative content can benefit from their work, and thus have incentive to produce more content. This kind of action simply penalizes the public at the whim of big business. This is sure to produce a backlash at some point.

NFL Season Begins

The NFL season begins tonight as the reigning Super Bowl champs the Colts play against the Saints. Many look forward to each new professional football season like a child looking forward to Christmas. (Or Nomad looking forward to a Mac media event) I enjoy football and love the J-E-T-S, Jets Jets Jets but am busy enjoying baseball right now. I hope the Jets' still have something to play for when I tune in for real following the Mets season. The Jets have a hard schedule this year and I'll be surprised if they do better than 9-7.
